Gold Trading for Beginners: How XAU/USD Lots, Pips and Margin Really Work
Gold looks like any currency pair on the order ticket, but it isn’t. On the common MT4/MT5 contract, 1.00 lot = 100 troy ounces, so a $1 move in gold is worth $100 per lot — and gold often moves tens of dollars in a session. If you only remember one thing: 0.01 lot of gold ≈ $1 per $1 move.
XAU/USD contract basics
| Lot | Ounces | $1 move | $10 move |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.00 | 100 oz | $100 | $1,000 |
| 0.10 | 10 oz | $10 | $100 |
| 0.01 | 1 oz | $1 | $10 |
Contract size is set by each broker. Right-click XAUUSD in MetaTrader’s Market Watch → Specification and check contract size, minimum volume and digits before your first trade.

What is a “pip” in gold?
Most platforms quote gold to two decimals. Many traders call $0.10 one pip, others call $0.01 a point. The names vary; the dollar distance to your stop doesn’t. Size trades in dollars of price movement and the confusion disappears.
Position sizing for gold
Lots = Risk in $ ÷ (Stop distance in $ × 100)
Example: $1,000 account, 1% risk
Risk = $10. Stop = $5 below entry. $10 ÷ (5 × 100) = 0.02 lot.
Example: $100 account
1% risk is $1. Even a tight $3 stop needs 0.0033 lot — below the 0.01 minimum. At 0.01 lot a $3 stop risks $3 (3%), a $10 stop risks 10%. That’s why gold is harder than EUR/USD on tiny accounts; see our $100 account lot-size guide for the forex comparison.
How margin works on gold
Margin = Price × Ounces ÷ Leverage. For illustration, at a gold price of $4,000 one ounce (0.01 lot) is $4,000 of exposure; at 1:500 that ties up $8 of margin. Low margin does not mean low risk — the exposure is still a full ounce of gold.
What moves gold
US interest rates and the dollar
Gold pays no interest, so changes in expected US rates matter. Follow the Fed funds rate history and Fed Chair remarks — the September 2026 hike to 3.75–4.00% is a recent example of a decision traders priced in for weeks.
Scheduled US data
CPI and the jobs report (8:30 a.m. New York time) often bring the sharpest gold moves of the week. Check the economic calendar and avoid opening new positions seconds before a release.
A beginner checklist
- Start on a demo account and trade 0.01 lot only.
- Decide your stop in dollars first, then the lot size.
- Expect wider spreads around news and at the daily rollover.

Frequently asked questions
How much is 0.01 lot in gold?
On the common 100-ounce contract, 0.01 lot is 1 ounce, so each $1 move in gold changes your profit or loss by about $1.
How much money do I need to start trading gold?
There is no fixed minimum, but with $100 even 0.01 lot risks several percent per trade on normal stops. Many beginners practise on demo first.
Is gold harder to trade than forex?
Per lot it moves much more in dollar terms, so the same lot size carries far more risk than on EUR/USD.
What time does gold move the most?
Often during the London–New York overlap and around US data releases such as CPI and the jobs report at 8:30 a.m. New York time.
Why do Fed decisions affect gold?
Gold pays no yield, so expectations for US interest rates and the dollar change its relative appeal.
