FAQ

What is the current US Fed funds rate?

According to the latest FOMC statement, the target range is 3.75–4.00%.

What were the high and low since 2021?

The high was 5.25–5.50% and the low was 0.00–0.25%.

Where does the data come from?

Rates and quotes from federalreserve.gov, prices from Yahoo Finance daily closes, positioning from CFTC COT reports. FRED (St. Louis Fed) for CPI, core PCE, unemployment, payrolls, 2Y/10Y yields and VIX.

How much do rate cuts matter?

A Fed cut lowers the return on dollar cash, which usually means a softer dollar, firmer gold (it pays no interest), support for growth stocks such as the Nasdaq through lower discount rates, lower short-term Treasury yields and cheaper floating-rate loans. The outcome depends on why the Fed cuts. In this page's data, the month of the 50bp cut on 18 Sep 2024 saw the dollar index −0.9%, gold +5.21% and the Nasdaq 100 +2.48%, while the 2-year yield fell from 3.91% at end-August to 3.66% at end-September. Cuts made because a recession is arriving can still come with weak stocks, so read the statement and dot plot along with the size of the move.
